Festival Poster Artist Liz Haywood-Sullivan
By Sue McCarthy
Each year a local artist is chosen to create the poster for our Annual Festival of the Arts. This year North River Arts Society is fortunate to feature Liz Haywood-Sullivan as its Poster Artist. Liz is a representational artist who specializes in pastel landscapes. Her paintings are defined by strong contrast values and graphic compositions. Liz states in the May 2007 issue of Artist Magazine, “I do a lot of layering, working from hard to soft pastels, and this gives me a wonderful translucency with amazing depth.”
The subject of this year’s poster is probably familiar to many South Shore residents….it is an image taken from the relatively new bridge spanning the North River between North Marshfield and Scituate. Liz states, “I chose this image because to me it is obviously evocative of the name of our organization. We are so fortunate to have this icon of natural beauty in our midst. I hope we never take it for granted. I have also painted the river from this viewpoint so often, in so many different variations that it has become second nature to me. This particular painting is one of those occasional confluences of several elements: mood, image, timing, and something I call ‘the muse is in’, where the painting just seems to flow and almost paints itself. Those make the best paintings….Where I live the sun sets at 4:00 p.m. in the middle of the summer because we are under so many trees. Now and then I’ll catch the light tipping the treetops and jump into my car and race down to the bridge to see what is left of the day. I am never, ever, disappointed!”
I asked Liz how she approaches her work once she has determined the subject. Liz compared the development of each painting to raising a child. “In the beginning I have all sorts of hope,” she explains. “Once I start, I’m encouraged and excited. But in every painting I hit a point similar to adolescence: I begin to argue with the painting and it argues back. I find areas that are a little rough and other areas that are not working well. At this point I have to overcome the resistance and discover the promise again.” She never leaves a work until the immediate problem is solved. “This makes it easier for me to come back into the work with energy,” she says. “Without the clear path I would just be wrestling without a direction. When I’m working alone in the studio, I think it’s important to play these sorts of games in order to retain a work’s energy.”
