Shape, value and often color play equal and essential roles in composing strong, dynamic paintings. In this pastel painting demonstration, emphasis will be placed on the percentage of contrasting elements such as large shapes to small, light values to dark, warm color to cool. An under-painting of watercolor will begin the composition of a shoreline scene, followed by application of soft pastel.

    About Deb Quinn-Munson

Deb is a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and has achieved Master Circle designation with the International Association of Pastel Societies. The Salmagundi Club and The Copley Society of Art are among Quinn-Munson’s additional elected memberships. Deb has won numerous prestigious awards in national competitions, including Prix de Pastel (Best of Show) in the international Association of Pastel Societies 27th Juried Exhibition and is a popular art instructor.

A seascape artist’s biggest challenge is painting motion. Our subject matter is always shifting, and our job is to convey power, motion and energy in a single still image. In demo, seascape artist Jeanne Rosier Smith will take you through her process of building a seascape that conveys the ocean’s movement and energy. She’ll share with you how she uses her reference photos and videos to develop a painting from start to finish, and how she gets her water to move. Not a pastelist? Much of the information here applies to any medium, and some is specific to pastel. Note: while the demo is NOT intended to be a paint along, Jeanne’s reference photo and materials list will be provided for your reference and information.

    About Jeanne Rosier Smith

A pastel painter and teacher for more than twenty years, Jeanne Rosier Smith is a Master Artist with the Copley Society, an IAPS Eminent Pastelist, a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the American Society of Marine Artists, and a member of New York’s Salmagundi Club. Jeanne has exhibited work in museums nationwide, is represented by nine galleries, and her work is in collections on six continents. Jeanne paints landscapes in all seasons, but her seascapes are her best known and best-loved subject.
