    About the Show:

His photographs evoke curiosity and empathy, reminding us that the human story is both deeply personal and universally familiar, even from faraway places.

    About the Instructor: Kelley MacDonald

After getting her Art History degree at Wheaton College, Kelley continued taking art classes at various Art Associations for 10 years before she started painting.  First with watercolor, then oil and now happily with acrylic and mixed media, it has been a lifetime of growing and exploring all things art.

Kelley has won numerous awards, and has taught classes and workshops for many years.  While for the majority of her career Kelley has been a literal, representational painter, in the past 4 years she has been diving into abstraction, particularly Intuitive Abstraction.  The history involved on the canvas, the multiple layers, the reveal and conceal and push and pull are what attracts her to this method.

A favorite thing to do is to travel, and be inspired by different landscapes and  cityscapes.  Kelley has traveled to Holland to paint, along with many places on this side of the ocean, namely Nova Scotia, Sedona, Santa Fe, St. Simon’s Island, Seattle, San Miguel de Allende, MX, California and Maine.

In 2009 Kelley founded the Artists’ Challenge Group “Girls Just Wanna Paint” which is a collection of award winning artists  who post a response to a new topic every month consecutively since July of 2009. Aside from the Providence Art Club Kelley is a member of the North River Arts Society in Marshfield, MA.  She has taught at the Art Club, Bristol Art Museum, and at North River Arts Society.

Whether you are a beginner or a skilled English Paper Piecer, there’s a place for you in this sewing circle. Join fellow makers on Thursday evenings in September as we gather for inspiration, project support, and community. Learn this slow sewing hand craft, start a new project or dust off that work in progress that has been long forgotten. Marissa will share techniques and help you get into a rhythm to keep your project progressing.

    About the Instructor: Marissa Flynn

Marissa Flynn has always been a maker at heart.  As a young mother, she gravitated toward the portable, hand sewing art of English Paper Piecing. EPP brought her the freedom to create wherever and whenever she found a pocket of time, while also being a slow, meditative craft. When her family moved abroad to Asia, this portable craft accompanied her and was a tool she relied on to establish community.  Most recently, while living in Seoul, South Korea, Marissa began a weekly fiber arts meet up, where women came together to craft and share their experiences of life abroad.  Now, after almost six years away from home, her family is settling back into life on the South Shore.
    Materials List:

    • Fabric and paper pieces that correspond with your pattern selection
    • Fabric scissors or rotary cutter with self-healing mat

This comprehensive and enjoyable workshop will better familiarize participants with color palettes, the effective blending of colors, use of brushes, and responsiveness of the medium on different papers. A range of exercises will allow painters to explore and apply various wash methods – wet-on-wet, dry-brush, glazing, blending, sharp and soft edges, dilution control, among others. Each dynamic session will address some of the many aspects of color theory. Using still life subjects & from the instructor’s demos, participants will learn ways to structure & simplify a composition, while learning to see and achieve the dynamic elements of light, contrast, values, movement, textures, etc., which make paintings come alive. Experimentation and interpretative methods will also be demonstrated, discussed and encouraged during the workshop. The workshop will comprise two studio classes, for about 8 hours each day, with a 45-60 minute lunch.

The workshop will provide a relaxed place for participants to quickly understand and then develop their skills, with the watchful input of the instructor. Some previous painting experience would be preferable, but not required. Participant’s abilities should include basic drawing, and a comfort level with watercolor. With a likely diversity of skills, capabilities will vary widely, but one-on-one instruction will be tailored to each individual’s level. Expectations are for a creative, exciting environment from which the collective energies and interests will allow everyone to learn much more than otherwise struggling to discover alone. Also, expectations are for making “mistakes”, and for having fun while learning with an award-winning watercolorist.

About the Instructor: Frank is  an accomplished watercolor painter of urban scenes, landscapes, homes, portraits and still life in a plein air, or a direct alla prima colorist style. He is continually inspired by the effortless, masterful works of watercolorists from many eras and cultures; particularly Sargent, Homer, Turner, Wyeth, Zorn, Reid, Prendergast, Hiroshi and fellow Winthrop native, John Whorf. Frank enjoys the fluid challenge and unexpected possibilities of watercolor. Given the inherent transparency of his preferred medium and infinite range of possible values and colors, he strives to express watercolor’s rich, luminous qualities in his pieces. He also enjoys working on figurative sketches in pencil, pen & ink, and other mediums. Frank is a signature member of the New England Watercolor Society (N.E.W.S.) Boston, and elected member of the Salmagundi Club of New York. He is also a multiple award-winning architectural illustrator for over five decades of collaborating with renowned national architects to produce striking illustrations of projects around the world. Frank recently had a highly regarded exhibition of his illustration works at the Boston Athenaeum, and radio & tv spots on Jared Bowen’s PBS Culture Programs.

"Light, shade, shadow, color, values, textures; the substantive and the fleeting, the design and contours of shape and form; the intersection and interplay of the tangible and intangible – these life qualities are always capturing my attention. The interpretative and unexpected possibilities of the watercolor medium present an exciting artistic challenge to capture these very qualities in every work. "

Portraiture is a time honored tradition regarded as the highest form of art in classical times. Working from live models over the course of this 8-week class, we will demystify portraiture by breaking down the process into simple steps and trick that make rendering the head easier and help achieve likeness. Students will enjoy gaining a solid foundation in understanding the structure and solidity of the human head and features. They will learn essential principles such as proportion, perspective, gesture, light logic and color theory. Students will learn to see abstract shapes and angles when rendering the portrait resulting in sharpening their eye and improving their skills overall. Students can choose whether they want to draw or paint. Drawing is taught using graphite and white chalk on toned paper. The “Zorn palette” (a well known, simplified portrait palette by Anders Zorn) will be taught to those who want to paint. Clear instruction will be given. Students can progress at their own pace and will receive individual critiques appropriate to their level.

Class price includes weekly live model fees.

“Faces are the most interesting things we see; other people fascinate me, and the most interesting aspect of other people - the point where we go inside them - is the face. It tells it all.”  - David Hockney

    About the Instructor: Lauren Bass

I have been an artist my entire life, but my path as an artist hasn’t been linear. Whether doodling in the margins of notebooks or sketching at home, I was always drawing as a child. However, the high school I went to didn’t offer art so I had no formal training until college. There I took my first painting class and was hooked. I would observe a still life setup, mixed colors, replicate the abstract shapes and then step a few paces back. Incredibly, there was the image on my canvas. It felt like magic! I found that time stood still when I was painting I was so absorbed! After getting a BA in Humanities, I got a BFA in graphic design and worked in advertising for several years. I put my career on hold when I had children but continued taking painting classes. As my children got older and more independent, I was able to be more serious, paint more frequently and study with many fabulous artists whose work I admired. I sought out some of the best artists in the country that work in my area of interest to study with. Luckily, many live locally.

Have you always wanted to try abstraction but can’t figure out a way to begin? This workshop will help jumpstart your process with exercises designed to get you thinking differently about abstraction. It isn't my goal to turn you into an abstract artist, it's to help you think more abstractly and concentrate more on what paint, shape, composition and color can do on their own without being hung on a representational image. How can we transcend the subject matter and evoke more of the experience we witnessed as artists?

We will begin these exercises outside in the morning with intense observation and note-taking and then move inside the studio to further explore mark-making and color exploration. This workshop is designed for oil or acrylic painters with prior painting experience. Other mediums are also welcome.

Pastel has been described as the most brilliant of art mediums. They are created using the same pigments as every other medium, but they are almost pure pigment, with the least amount of binder. The word “pastel” comes from the French word pastiche because the combined ingredients form a paste, not because the colors are pale or diluted. Works in pastel retain their color and integrity better than other mediums in that the pigments are least adulterated.

This one-day workshop is an introduction to the pastel medium. Your guide is Liz Haywood-Sullivan, a President Emerita of the International Association of Pastel Societies and a practicing pastelist, instructor and judge. She will lead a discussion about the facets of this versatile medium, which straddles the worlds of both drawing and painting. Topics will include the variations in different pastels and papers and how they affect painting outcomes, framing and presentation, and health and safety uses. She will do a painting demonstration, showing how to work with value layering, color mixing and mark making. You will then get a chance to try your hand at working with pastels. This is a highly interactive workshop so bring your questions. Materials will be provided.

      Instructor Bio:

Liz Haywood-Sullivan, PSA-MP, IAPS/EP, has been dedicated to working exclusively in the pastel medium since 1996. Her attraction to the medium is pastel's unique ability to capture light and atmosphere in the landscape. She is a sought-after instructor and judge for pastel societies and arts organizations around the world. Liz authored the popular book Painting Brilliant Skies and Water in Pastel (Northlight, 2013). Her award-winning pastel paintings have been featured in numerous books and magazine articles, and have appeared in national, international and museum exhibitions worldwide. Liz is a President Emerita of the International Association of Pastel Societies (2013-2017) and is a past president of the North River Arts Society in Massachusetts. Her work is represented by Vose Galleries of Boston.

Collage, or “Painting with Paper,” is becoming one of the most exciting mediums in the art world today. This class will allow you to explore and experiment with this fun and unique medium. Collage offers the opportunity to paint without fear. It transforms looking and composing into a playful game, where shapes of color can be easily cut and moved.

The element of SHAPE plays an important role in painting. Limiting the number of shapes in a composition can be challenging. The act of collaging helps you perceive shapes differently and encourages you to limit and simplify your design.

Each class will focus on a distinct approach and method for creating unique and unusual designs.

Most materials will be supplied, but students are encouraged to collect and share papers they may have.

Question?  Feel free to call Kevin Dunn at 781 837-3786.

Kevin Dunn has been carving birds for over seventy years and his birds have been sold in gift shops and galleries in Washington, D.C., Cambridge, Cohasset, Martha’s Vineyard, as well as the Marshfield Fair, the South Shore Science Center Corn Festival, and the South Shore Audubon’s Webster Farm Day. “There is such creativity involved. A lot of decisions go into creating something,” he said. “But at the same time it’s very therapeutic. You lose yourself in what you’re physically doing. Mentally, all the cares of the world just fade away.”

In this class students will grow their fundamental watercolor skills by using limited color palettes in a series of guided painting studies and exercises. We’ll begin with an ‘extreme’ limited palette of Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna to explore value, tone, and technique with this beautiful and versatile pairing of pigments. In the following classes we’ll add in select colors (provided by the instructor) to see how different limited palettes impact a painting and how limited palettes can strengthen your understanding of color theory. You’ll learn how to choose a limited palette for each painting you create to help unify and create harmony in your finished work, and also to help simplify the painting process.

Some previous experience with basic watercolor technique is needed for this class

Your instructor will be providing additional paint pigments for our in-class exercises (beyond the 2 tubes that you are required to bring) to keep materials costs down and facilitate class lessons.

The Layered Large Landscape: using indirect painting to mimic Renaissance painters approach to the very large studio oil painting.

Join me over 6 weeks as we start with composition using our color study, plain air painting, or photo to create a large -minimum  one side greater than 30 inches - studio layered oil painting.

Appropriate for oil painters wanting to jump into learning to use  comparative measurement to change a smaller painting or study to a large composition.

We will create using a grisaille start after drawing, a first layer of “dead color” followed by 3 - 6 layers including scumbling and glazes as finish techniques to achieve a luminescent painting with depth and detail!

SHAKE IT UP! This 6 week course will shake you from your comfort zone and expose you to different ways to approach your art.  It will be helpful if you are feeling stuck, or if you are bored or stalled, or if you simply want to try some new things to stretch yourself creatively.  For example we’ll spend one week working BIG. One week doing monochromatic paintings.  Once week doing very small works, but multiples of them.  I will be working in acrylic, but if you would prefer to work in oils, that will be fine, too.  Be open to new or different approaches and be fearless!

          Materials List

Really, any medium you are familiar with! IF you are a watercolorist,

be prepared to use big brushes and large paper at times :)

I always recommend a warm and a cool of red, yellow and blue, plus titanium white and a dark neutral such as (what I always have on hand) BURNT Umber (raw umber will not give you the same results) or Payne’s gray.

          Examples of warm/cool:

          • Cadmium Red LIGHT and Alizarin Crimson or a Quinacridone Magenta or a Rose
          • Cad Yellow Medium and Cad Yellow Lemon (or cad yellow light)
          • Ultramarine Blue and Pthalo Blue
          • Artist’s tape
          • Apron or big shirt
          • Container for water or turps, for oil paints
          • Disposable Palette
          • Canvas Boards, assorted sizes, and/or painting paper such as Canson Painting Paper pads in any size. OR - any heavy paper like Bristol Board or Canvas Paper. • Assorted sized of brushes - I use mostly Flat brushes, from 1/4 inch to 2 inches - you can get the larger ones at hardware stores

In this one-day workshop, we will work on various ways to begin a pastel painting, focusing on color theory and how the use of underlying color can help shape a final piece. In the morning, you will create four different studies, all from the same photo reference, exploring four distinct color methods. You then will see how your initial application of color creates color harmonies and tensions and changes the mood of a painting once you apply your final layers of pastel. In the afternoon, you will create a larger piece using the approach you find most appealing – there are no wrong choices! All students will have personalized feedback and guidance as we explore these options and start to see the power of color in a composition. This class is appropriate for all levels. A materials list will be provided in advance.

          About the Instructor: Heather Quay

“My goal is to have my paintings capture the feeling of a particular time and place. I have always been fascinated by the way that painters portray the quality and temperature of light. As a pastel painter, I continue to be drawn to scenes where the light is the central character. Whatever I am painting – from landscapes, both natural and manmade, to figures, animals, and portraits – I’m always striving to render the light I see onto the surface of my artwork.”

Heather’s work has been included in juried exhibits across New England and online, and has won a number of awards. She is an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a Signature Member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, the Central Massachusetts Pastel Society, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and the Maryland Pastel Society. She is also a member of the North River Arts Association, the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Lyme Art Association. Heather is a Featured Artist on the Artsy Shark website.

Collage (from the French: coller, “to glue”) is a technique of creating art from an assemblage of different materials and media. A collage may include magazine and newspaper images, photographs, handmade papers, paint, ribbon, lace and an infinity of found objects – glued to a surface of some sort. In this 4-week class, for beginner to intermediate collage artists, we will explore a short history, and the basic techniques, of collage. We will discuss the various surfaces (substrates) that are commonly used; the many adhesives available and how to determine which one to use for which projects. Along with learning the actual technique of creating a collage, participants will engage in exercises to see how to create a pleasing composition, how to build interesting layers, and how to intuitively make the work “their own”. So much to cover – so little time!

I will provide heavy papers and cardboard to work on, but please feel free to bring your own substrate material. Again, I’ll have PLENTY of materials for collaging, but bring any papers that you love: some suggestions…

          • newspaper, magazine pages, music pages, maps, comics, colorful
          • black and white or color COPIES of photographs (I’ll explain!)
          • tissue paper – colored, printed, wrinkled, etc.

          About the Instructor: Laura Harvey

As a mixed media artist, Laura creates intricate layered collages on a variety of substrates; from canvas and traditional birch panels to hollow-core doors. To intuitively build each piece, Laura draws from a rich and unique collection of media and vintage ephemera, building layers using paint, papers (found, purchased or hand painted), acrylic mediums, graphite, photo transfers and more. She derives a storyteller's satisfaction watching each piece evolve during the creative process - from the initial blur of an idea to a completed visual.

This 4-week class will dive into the world of block printing, covering a crash-course on all things blocks for artists of all sorts who want to bring their creativity to life in the printed world. This class will cover techniques for drawing, carving, and printing block prints on a variety of mediums. Rachel will help you bring to life a block and a variety of prints in different mediums of your own imagination.

About the Instructor: Rachel Nerger (Ray Prints)

I started block printing in 2020 when I was looking to reconnect with my creativity outside of the everyday hustle and bustle and a full-time job in finance. I have always been an artist at heart, and have continued to explore new mediums even as I jumped into the professional world.

Over the past few years, all the hours of drawing, carving, and printing blocks has led me to “launch” Ray Prints where I’ve been able to share my love of block prints with the south shore at different pop ups and markets. I have fallen in love with block printing for the way that it fits into life - it is accessible, affordable and has provided me with hours of escape as I work through each step in creating totally unique pieces of art with each stamp and Speedball carve.

          Materials List:

          About the Instructor: Sue Casey

I don't think of “art” as being separate from myself - it is and always has been a part of who I am. I've been thinking about, looking at, making, and teaching art for as long as I can remember.

My inspiration for my work comes from nature where I enjoy walking along the beach, hiking in the White Mountains and paddle-boarding and kayaking in the North River. Every day I am inspired by the beauty of nature and the light and color that surround me.

I have always been drawn to mixed media due to the ability to experiment with layering materials and textures help me reset and work through ideas. I am particularly drawn to geometric shapes and how they appear in an organic setting. My goal is to simplify these shapes and be less deliberate over the arrangements of found and painted paper shapes and edges to create an overall cohesive composition.
